PERSONAL BIO & MILITARY SERVICE

A second generation American of Irish and Italian descent, Peter Herron was born on June 6, 1963 in Quincy, MA as the oldest child of Donald Earl and Janice Procopio Herron. He attended Quincy High School, class of 1982. Soon after, he entered the United States Marine Corps in November 1983. Upon completion of recruit training at Parris Island, SC, he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, NC as a member of the newly formed 2nd Light Armored Vehicle Battalion. In 1984, he arrived in Montgomery County as the guest of fellow Marine and friend, Gary Callicutt. It was then that he met and fell in love twice – first with his wife Nancy Callicutt, and second with the place that her family has called home for centuries, Montgomery County. Pete and Nancy married August 23, 1986 and settled into their Montgomery County home.

LAW ENFORCEMENT

Once his enlistment in the Marine Corps was complete, Pete entered employment with the State of North Carolina in the juvenile justice system at Samarcand Manor. He worked there for ten years and was promoted to the position of third shift supervisor.  He continued his service with the State of North Carolina, but as a law enforcement officer with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission Division of Enforcement. NCWRC policy at that time required that he could not be assigned to his home county for the first three years. The Herrons retained their house in Montgomery County, and after three years, found themselves blessed with an opening and the ability to return to Montgomery County in 2001. Pete then served as the Wildlife Officer assigned to Montgomery and Stanly Counties, and Nancy began employment with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
